Integrated Land Use Planning

Avoiding the anarchic and disorderly exploitation of land and its natural resources is one of the major challenges facing most tropical countries.  Some of them have sophisticated planning systems to curb this, others do not.  In many countries, the state has legal jurisdiction over the majority of rural land, while in others, big efforts have been made to grant title to private land-users.

EDG has been involved in land-use planning exercises in many countries, and over a wide range of geographical scales:  we spent four years helping plan suitable land uses in Ovamboland, northern Namibia, the country's most populous region; and for two years we worked on a land-use and economic development plan for the north-east part of the island of Tobago.
