Madagascar - Advice to QMM
QMM, an affiliate company of the Rio Tinto group, was preparing an environmental statement for the Madagascan National Environment Agency, prior to making a decision on whether to extract ilmenite from beach deposits in south-east Madagascar. Ilmenite is used in the manufacture of titanium.
EDG provided advice to QMM, focussing on the future social and economic impact of the mining operations. This relationship later evolved into the supervision of a doctoral candidate from Oxford University, working under a Darwin Initiative grant from the British Government.
